MAYA DELILAH RELEASES NEW SINGLE “ACTRESS” INSPIRED BY ’70s SOUL MUSIC

November 3, 2023

London-based singer-songwriter and guitarist Maya Delilah has released her new single “Actress” via Blue Note/Capitol. “Actress” completes a trilogy of 2023 singles that included Maya’s warm and nostalgic track “Necklace” and her bittersweet love song “Silver Lining.” The Line of Best Fit recently said “Showcasing the infinite extent of her artistry by delving into new depths of songwriting, Maya Delilah is definitely one to watch next year.”

“‘Actress’ is a song I made with producer Josh Grant and writer Trey Campbell,” Maya explains. “It came about by wanting to make a song that sounded like we’d sampled an old school record (but had actually made the sample loop ourselves). The lyrics were inspired by the feeling of pretending to be something you’re not to a partner and getting tired of always being the ‘actress’. It’s sonically inspired by soul music from the ’70s such as Curtis Mayfield, Donald Byrd, Idris Muhammad and a hint of Santana in the guitar solo (but all with a modern twist).”

A 23-year-old singer-songwriter and guitarist from North London, Maya attended the prestigious BRIT School whose alumni include Adele, Amy Winehouse, and FKA twigs, among many others. While building up a devoted following on Tik Tok and Instagram where she gained notice for her incredible guitar abilities, Maya started self-releasing music in 2020 and has already racked up more than 50 million streams of fan favorites including “Breakup Season,” “Tangerine Dream,” and “Moonflower.” In 2022, Maya released the single “Pretty Face” and made a memorable appearance on the collection Blue Note Re:imagined II where she put her own distinct twist on Cassandra Wilson’s cover of Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon.”
