BLUE NOTE 85th ANNIVERSARY HAPPENINGS: A FRANCIS WOLFF PHOTO EXHIBIT, VMP ANTHOLOGY & MORE

April 12, 2024

Blue Note Records’ 85th Anniversary celebrations continue with the announcement of the new photography exhibition The All Seeing Eye: Blue Note Records Through the Lens of Francis Wolff presented by The Folk Americana Roots Hall of Fame which opens at the Boch Center in Boston on May 1. Other anniversary happenings include a 2nd pressing of the VMP Anthology: The Story of Blue Note Records, the return of the Blue Note Authorized Dealer Program at indie record stores, and the release of several new Blue Note Merch collections.

85 years ago in 1939, a German-Jewish immigrant and passionate Jazz fan named Alfred Lion produced his first recording session in New York City founding what would go on to become the most iconic and longest-running Jazz label in the world. For 85 years Blue Note Records has represented The Finest In Jazz, tracing the entire history of the music from Hot Jazz, Boogie Woogie, and Swing, through Bebop, Hard Bop, Post-Bop, Soul Jazz, Avant-Garde, and Fusion, and—after being relaunched by Bruce Lundvall in 1984—has remained the leading label dedicated to documenting today’s vibrant and creatively thriving Jazz scene under the leadership of current President Don Was, who took the helm in 2012.

The vitality of Blue Note Records is evident in the slate of exciting new releases that have already come out to wide acclaim this year by Charles Lloyd, Norah Jones, Julian Lage, Joel Ross, and Ethan Iverson with upcoming releases on the way from Melissa Aldana, Bill Frisell, Nduduzo Makhathini, Meshell Ndegeocello, Bill Charlap, Walter Smith III, Immanuel Wilkins, The Blue Note Quintet, and more. 2024 will also see previously unreleased archival live recordings by Ron Miles and Wayne Shorter.

  • The All Seeing Eye: Blue Note Records Through the Lens of Francis Wolff: The Folk Americana Roots Hall of Fame explores Blue Note history with an exhibition of Francis Wolff’s photography opening May 1 at the Boch Center in Boston. Wolff fled Nazi Germany in 1939 bound for New York City where he reunited with his childhood friend Alfred Lion and joined him in running his newly founded label Blue Note Records. Soon, Wolff was bringing his Rolleiflex camera to recording sessions and jazz clubs where he captured intimate portraits of musicians at work, and over the next three decades he documented jazz history as it happened. While these candid photographs gave the Blue Note brand a distinctive look, Wolff’s images are now recognized as true works of art. Tickets are on sale now.
